One day, while the Swiss inventor George de Mestral was taking his dog for a walk, he became fascinated with how the seed of the burdock plant had attached itself to his clothes and to his dog's fur. While looking closely at the seed under a microscope, he noticed the hook systems the seeds used and realised that the same approach could be used to join other things together.
